Long before Apple released the MacBook, there was the Sharp PC-7000 luggable portable computer from 1985. It sports a portable radio-inspired design with the ability to detach the keyboard from the display and use it as a protective cover of sorts.
The case itself measured in at a hefty 16″ x 8.5″ x 6″ and weighs nearly 19 pounds, thanks to its chassis being fabricated from steel. As for hardware, it features a 10.5″ LCD (640 x 200 resolution) screen with an aspect ratio of 2.1:1, two half-height Canon 5.25″ floppy disk drives, mounted vertically and with shock absorption, an Intel 8086 processor, and 384KB of RAM. Believe it or not, this machine retailed for a whopping $1,795 ($5,247 in 2024).

I worked with one of those between 1988 and 1990. I was developing software for lotteries and aside from using the computer to edit and store programs on its dual 360 KB floppies, but would also use it as a terminal to connect to a mini-computer or use KERMIT to transfer files. The fact that it had an attached printer was an unheard-of option at the time. The monochrome screen was easy to read and it had a good keyboard,” said one commenter.
