Let’s face it, purchasing old shopping carts ($45 – $50+) is far less pricier than a new wheelchair ($100+), so what better way to make use of the former than by turning them into affordable wheelchairs for those in need? This designer is doing just that, and is offering two models: a ‘manually propelled wheelchair’ that can be self-pushed and then a ‘transport wheelchair’ for use with a family member or a caregiver.
‘Cart Wheelchair DIY’ was specially designed so that it can be made in basic workshops, without any specialized tools. Put simply, all it takes is modifying second-hand shopping carts and adding parts for more for a more comfortable position, such as a small basket, seat cushion, as well as a hand brake for extra safety.
