Meta’s launch of their standalone Meta AI app was announced today at their LlamaCon event. While some may see it as just an extension of Facebook, it’s a bit more than that, though it does lean heavily on Meta’s existing ecosystem.
Running on their Llama 4 language model, it’s built to take on big names like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. Unlike before, when Meta AI was part of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, this new standalone app acts as a one-stop spot for AI features like chatting, creating images and videos, and translating languages. It’s available on iOS and Android, free to use, and currently rolled out in the U.S. and Canada, with plans for broader expansion

What sets it apart is its personalization angle. Meta AI pulls from user data you’ve already shared on Facebook and Instagram—like your profile details, posts, or likes—to tailor responses. For example, it might suggest local activities based on your listed hometown or recipes based on your dietary preferences shared on social media.

It also has a “Memory” feature, retaining details from past chats (e.g., on WhatsApp) to make future interactions more relevant, like recalling your travel preferences for vacation planning. There’s also a social “Discover feed” where you can share AI interactions, like asking it to describe you in three emojis and posting the result, though sharing is optional. The web interface has been optimized for larger screens and desktop workflows and includes an improved image generation experience, with more presets and new options for modifying style, mood, lighting and colors. We’re also testing a rich document editor in select countries, one that you can use to generate documents full of text and images and then export those documents as PDFs. And we’re testing the ability to import documents for Meta AI to analyze and understand,” said the company.
