StuffMadeHere Reverse Camera See Around Walls
Inventor Shane Wighton of StuffMadeHere unveils his latest project, and it’s an innovative reverse camera that can see around things. A camera that can see around things typically functions by using a laser-based system that bounces light off a wall or surface near a hidden object, capturing the scattered light that returns to the lens.

In Wighton’s case, his system consists of a spinning metal arm with one end containing a photo detector cart that moves up and down a rail. This photo detector is looking sideways at a mirror, the latter of which can be precisely angled. The other end has a steel weight to always keep the photo detector balanced. We won’t spoil everything, but can say that it can emulate some wacky lenses and produce some unusual results.

Fun fact: all of these wacky lenses simulated in this video actually exist, and are widely used in manufacturing and inspection! Telecentric(no perspective) lenses are most common and very popular in metrology, but pericentric(seeing more than one side of the object), hypercentric(seeing behind and/or underneath the object), and even wacky combinations with mirrors. This allows you, as a common example, to inspect the cap on a plastic bottle from all sides, at the same time, using the same camera. Above, around the corners, from the side, AND from below,” said one commenter.
