Supersonic Canned Air
Going supersonic with canned air is surprisingly easy, and you won’t need any jet engines to do so. Cylo’s Garage uses a basic Schlieren imaging setup to capture the shock diamonds from the ultra thin tubes flowing out from the Staples-brand canned air.

Shock diamonds, also known as Mach diamonds, are essentially patterns of shock waves that form when a supersonic nozzle’s exhaust is slightly over-expanded. In other words, the static pressure of the gases exiting the nozzle is less than the ambient air pressure. Schlieren imaging, an optical technique that makes invisible flow elements visible, doesn’t require a pricey setup, just a normal lens, razor blade, an imaging sensor, and a light source.
