Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance hardware technically can’t play SEGA Genesis or Sony PlayStation games, but with the help of Raspberry Pi, this has now become a reality. Simply put, the mini computer runs software that streams games directly to a Game Boy Advance via its Link Port. Video / audio are then compressed and transmitted in real time to the handheld, while the latter responds with its current input, allowing to play games of any platform supported by RetroPie.

Macho Nacho Productions wanted to modernize the Game Boy Advance SP, and what better way than with a pair of Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers? Since the GBA SP already has a mod kit that allows you to output to a standard TV, finding a way to connect the controllers was the only thing left to do. So, a 3D-printed trunk of sorts was fabricated to hold the Joy-Cons, while a Raspberry Pi Zero-powered PCB transmitted the commands.

Ken Burns of Tiny Circuits is no stranger to creating tiny electronic devices, whether it be television sets or arcade games, but Thumby might be his most ambitious project yet. Ben Rose, the company’s chief engineer, wanted to make something even smaller that was inspired by the small screens on fitness trackers, but with the ability to play games on-the-go. The first prototype took around 10 iterations to get right. Read more for two videos, including a hands-on review.

West Yorkshire Police arrested three men linked to several car thefts in the area, but what they used to steal these vehicles is the surprising part. They discovered that the trio was using a Supreme-branded device that resembled a Nintendo Game Boy, although the hardware inside can’t be used to play games whatsoever. The device itself costs $27,000 USD and is designed to bypass the security system of the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid SUV. Read more for a video and additional information.

Macho Nacho Productions’ Tito created the Thicc Boi SP, and explains why it’s the last mod your Game Boy Advance SP will ever need. Why? Not only does it include a larger 4,500mAh lithium-polymer battery, but Bluetooth audio and wireless charging as well. The mod kit will be available to all soon, and there is some skill required to install everything, but thanks to flat flex technology, all you need is just a little soldering experience. Game Boy Advance fans rejoice! Goodboy Galaxy is the first commercial GBA game that will be released in 13-years, complete with both digital and physical cartridge versions. Sure, this isn’t a handheld game console that can be taken anywhere, but this nuclear-powered device is most certainly be a conversation piece. Inventor Ian Charnas decided to create a “Nuclear Game Boy” of sorts that runs on a nuclear-powered battery that takes around two months to fully charge. Unfortunately, it is only good for approximately 1-hour of Tetris gaming even after all that time spent powering up.

Yes, even 18-years after the original Nintendo Game Boy ceased production there is still at least one developer making new games for the console. Meet GreenBoy Games’ developer Dana Puch, a one-person studio still making physical cartridges, with the latest project being “The Shapeshifter”. Since Game Boy games are limited to 32kB and 1MB max in size, with 160×144 pixels resolution in just 4 colors, Puch had to get creative to make things work.

First released in February 2003, Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance SP is a little larger than the GBA when closed and approximately the same height as the Game Boy Color when open. What if there was a portable Wii in this same form factor? Meet the Wii SPii Portable. This custom game console took around a year to complete, beginning with the 3D printed case concepts to being able to run Wii and Gamecube game ISO files stored on an SD card as well as other games via emulators.
