Where there’s a will, there’s a way, and that holds especially true for this group of teens from Nigeria. These group of eight from northern Nigeria have now become social media stars for making science fiction movies using a broken smartphone. They call themselves the Critics Company and started this whole journey back in 2016 using special effects they learned from YouTube videos. Read more for a video and additional information.
Their first 10-minute film, “Redemption,” was shot with a broken tripod stand to hold up a smartphone with a cracked screen. After uploading it to YouTube, many international media organizations began to notice them, including vteran film maker Kemi Adetiba who helped them raise $5,800 in a crowdfunding campaign to upgrade their equipment. They hope to one day conquer Nollywood, which is currently plagued with poorly written scripts and stale story lines.
