Unlike traditional hybrid-yachts, the “Solarwave 64” has been specifically designed for long-range solar-cruising, using the power of the sun only, thus removing the need to start the diesel-engine since battery-capacity is predetermined for more than one night of permanent cruising. However, if he sun doesn’t shine for several days, a range-extender offers a safe alternate power-source, guaranteeing fully-charged batteries while removing weather dependency. “Solarwave yachts say this isn’t of a ‘mild-hybrid’ with a range of 10 miles at 4 knots, but a solar-hybrid with unlimited range and speeds of more than 10 knots – plus electric motors. The ‘power’ model also carries two ‘D3 volvopenta’ 220 ps diesel engines providing adding over 20 knots of power to the solar-power-supply. Upon special request ‘Solarwave’ can also feature sails, creating a juxtaposition between innovative nautical-technology and traditional sailing methods,” reports Design Boom.
