A 30,000-pound bus that can climb a volcano? That’s no movie scene—it’s the Torsus Praetorian, a vehicle that laughs in the face of rugged terrain. Built in Slovakia on a MAN TGM 4×4 chassis, this isn’t your average city shuttle.
Who says an off-road bus has to feel like a military vehicle? With a curb weight of 29,542-pounds, this expedition vehicle measures nearly 29 feet long, 8.4 feet wide, and stands an impressive 12.6 feet tall. Power is derived from a MAN 6.9L six-cylinder diesel engine generating 285 horsepower and 848 lb-ft of torque. “The Praetorian is designed to transport personnel and equipment over rough terrain and in harsh conditions,” Torsus declares on its website.

Built on MAN’s battle-tested truck hardware, with roots tracing back to 1758 Germany, the vehicle leverages a legacy of engineering grit. The MAN D0836 diesel engine, paired with a MAN/ZF 12AS 1210 OD Tip-Matic semi-automatic transmission, delivers power with surgical precision. Front and rear differential locks ensure traction when the ground turns treacherous, while 15.74 inches of ground clearance lets it glide over obstacles that would strand lesser vehicles. Torsus didn’t just slap a bus body on a truck chassis; they engineered a composite, Line-X-finished fiberglass shell that’s as tough as it looks. “It’s almost as easy to drive as a large van like a Sprinter or Ducato,” says All4Bus, Torsus’ German distributor.

Now, enter the Praetorian Liberra, the expedition motorhome that takes this platform to new heights. Collaboratively crafted by All4Bus and Dämmler, a Saxon furniture and camper specialist with 80 years of expertise, the Liberra transforms the Praetorian into a rolling luxury lodge. The interior is a masterclass in rustic-chic design, with solid wood surfaces and modular furniture that balance warmth and functionality. Measuring just under 28 feet, it’s slightly shorter than the standard Praetorian, trading bumper protectors for a sleeker profile. Inside, you’ll find a rear bedroom with a double bed (or optional king-size configuration), a wet bathroom, a kitchen with a gas stove, oven, and compressor fridge, and a dinette that converts into a second double bed for four travelers total. “The Liberra is like a tailored suit,” All4Bus notes.

Off-road prowess meets onboard livability. The Liberra’s 2.18-meter interior height offers ample headroom, while multiple skylights bathes the interior space with natural light. A satellite TV and audio system keep you entertained, whether parked in Patagonia or the Gobi Desert. “It’s a symbiosis of off-road capability and genuine living comfort,” Torsus enthuses, and the Liberra delivers on that promise. Its 300-liter fuel tank ensures you can roam far without refueling, and the MAN chassis’ lifetime rust warranty on the composite body means it’s built to last. Starting at €550,000 (roughly $635,550), it’s a steep investment, but a compelling proposition.
