Toyota Hitchless Towing Concept Wi-Fi

An all-new Toyota hitchless towing concept uses Wi-Fi-like wireless technology instead of any human intervention or physical connection. Put simply, a lead Toyota Sienna vehicle basically set their speed with a human driver and the second vehicle’s autonomous driving system took over, making turns as well as braking, during the trial runs.

Since this is just a proof of concept, the distance between the two vehicles is larger than they would be in real world use cases, mainly for safety reasons. If it eventually reaches production, the safety driver in the second vehicle may be eliminated entirely. This concept can be a game-changer, just as long as you don’t follow these conspiracy theorists by installing faraday cages on Wi-Fi routers.

For the proof of concept, we used research grade sensors. Everyone thought we would be riding in AVs [autonomous vehicles] by now,” said Lisa Maitre, senior engineering manager in the Integrated Vehicle Systems division of Toyota Motor North America R&D.
