Wayne Gerdes, an expert at hypermilling, or a driver who uses techniques to maximize fuel efficiency, managed to achieve 93.158 mpg while driving coast-to-coast in his Toyota Prius LE, setting a new Guinness World Record.
The trip took Gerdes from Los Angeles City Hall to New York City Hall, covering 3,211.7 miles where he encountered a wide variety of terrain as well as unpredictable weather. This included driving up mountain as high as 7,000 feet and other worldly landscapes like the Mojave Desert where the temperature exceeded 105 degrees.

For a record attempt like this, it’s a lot of planning. You can’t just go sight unseen into doing this. You have to have that plan. But you also have to be able to work on the fly. So, if things change, you have to switch up your plan. Reroute. Figure out what you’re going to be able to do to achieve that goal,” said Gerdes.
