Process
To start designing your BOOM 3, just open myBOOM Studio on a desktop computer or mobile device, and start selecting new fabric designs like Jungle Bell (above), NY Kitty, Frozen Kingdom, Marble Marvel, Blue Dreams or even Berry Fun. There’s a total of twelve fabrics and eight color options for the caps, spine, loop and volume buttons, while additional colors and fabrics will become available over time. All speakers designed in myBOOM Studio boast the same features as BOOM 3, including 360° sound (you’ll never have to turn the speaker towards you), deep bass, portable size, Magic Button, compatibility with the POWER UP charging dock and of course IP67 rating for staying waterproof + dustproof. It’s also PartyUp compatible, so you can pair it with up to 150 of any generation BOOM or MEGABOOM speaker for even fuller sound.
Review
Similar to the BOOM 3, it features the iconic cylindrical shape, fabric-wrapped exterior as well as large rubber volume controls in the shape of ‘plus’ and ‘minus’ symbols, making it a breeze to control. The top boasts three illuminated buttons — power, Bluetooth pairing, and a multi-function “Magic Button” for playback and track skipping – a single tap lets you play or pause, while a double tap skips to the next track. The speaker features two primary drivers and two passive radiators, with a frequency response range of 90-20,000Hz and a 90dB peak output. Download the “BOOM & MEGABOOM” app (iOS and Android) to power up the speaker, adjust the volume without touching the device itself, adjust equalizer settings, set up wireless daisy chaining, create playlists for compatible apps and set alarms on the speaker. Battery life was superb, as we were able to get 13-hours of continuous usage on medium-high volume when fully charged. The fabric loop can be used to hang it in a secure location, and yes, it can even float should you decide to take the speaker into a pool.
Verdict
Should you get a custom UE myBOOM 3? Even if you have one of its predecessors, this is a fantastic speaker for the price ($179.99) and not only is it fully customizable, you’ll most certainly appreciate its “360-degree” sound, along with its rugged features.
