The US Air Force has just released the first image of Northrop Grumman’s B-21 Raider flight testing at Edwards Air Force Base where it continues to make progress toward becoming the backbone of the branch’s bomber fleet.

Many of the B-21’s details remain highly classified, but F-35 program manager Chris Bogdan said the stealth bomber’s engines would be similar enough to the F-35’s Pratt & Whitney F135 engine to reduce its cost. Its long-range, highly survivable, penetrating strike design will incrementally replace the B-1 / B-2 bombers and play a major role supporting national security objectives.

We are in the flight test program, the flight test program is proceeding well. It is doing what flight test programs are designed to do, which is helping us learn about the unique characteristics of this platform, but in a very, very effective way,” said Andrew Hunter, assistant secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics.
