Vollebak Thermal Camouflage Jacket Invisibility Cloak
There are invisible solar cells, and then Vollebak’s Thermal Camouflage Jacket, which is touted as the world’s first. The company teamed up with the University of Manchester, the home of graphene, The National Graphene Institute and Graphene Engineering & Innovation Center to develop this computer-programmable jacket. It paves the way towards a real invisibility cloak, because in infrared you can simply program entire parts of it to simply disappear.

The front consists of 42 graphene patches that can be controlled individually similar to pixels. Each one of these patches is made from over 100 layers of pure graphene capable of controlling thermal radiation on the jacket’s surface without changing its temperature. Vollebak spent a week writing code that would allow the team to play Tetris in infrared. So, rather than seeing heat radiating from a human body, the camera simply sees the pattern of a classic video game. Since every single patch can be programmed individually to emit a different level of thermal radiation, the jacket can blend into its surroundings and appear invisible to infrared cameras.

Vollebak Thermal Camouflage Jacket Invisibility Cloak

So for the last 3 years we’ve been bringing together the fields of physics, optical materials, electronic control systems, textiles and engineering, to create a single piece of clothing that someone can actually wear, that is also an advanced optical device. Today it’s simply a proof of concept, and the jacket is not for sale. But hopefully we’re on our way to creating something so advanced that you’ll never actually see it,” said Vollebak.
