Who remembers when SEGA first introduced the Visual Memory Unit (VMU) for the Dreamcast back in 1999? It is basically a memory card that doubled as a pocketable gaming device with a monochrome screen and basic controls. Fast-forward to 2025, and 8BitMods has modernized this iconic peripheral with the VMU Pro.
First, the VMU Pro upgrades the original’s monochrome screen to a 16-bit color IPS TFT display. “It wouldn’t be a VMU if it couldn’t run your Dreamcast mini-games,” 8BitMods notes on their site.Beyond that, the screen supports up to 5x scaling and customizable color themes.

Storage is another leap forward. The original VMU held a mere 128KB, enough for a handful of saves but often forcing players to juggle multiple cards. The VMU Pro supports microSD cards up to 2TB, which 8BitMods calls “endless storage for [the] Dreamcast.” This means you can store saves for every Dreamcast game you own—and then some. Automatic game detection and virtual VMU creation streamline the process, assigning dedicated storage channels for each title, whether you’re using original discs or optical drive emulators (ODEs) like the Terraonion MODE. “We bring automatic game detection with GameID to all your consoles, and soon to your Dreamcast,” 8BitMods shared.

What elevates the VMU Pro beyond a memory card is its ability to double as a standalone retro gaming handheld. It’s not just about Dreamcast mini-games; the device packs emulators for 8-bit systems like the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Gear, and Master System. 8BitMods has future-proofed the device with plans for additional emulators and an SDK for user-developed apps, ensuring it evolves with the community. The inclusion of Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi connectivity opens up possibilities like multiplayer pairing for Dreamcast games or wireless data transfers.
Battery life addresses one of the original VMU’s biggest flaws: its reliance on coin batteries that drained quickly. The VMU Pro’s 720mAh rechargeable cell, charged via USB-C, offers up to six hours of emulation or a month of standard memory card use.
Available now in seven color options for $81.23, the VMU Pro balances affordability with premium features. MP3 playback turns the VMU Pro into a pocket music player, and its ability to run DOOM demonstrates its surprising power.
