Polymega SEGA Dreamcast support could be coming soon to the modular gaming console by Playmaji, which already offers backwards compatibility with several CD-based platforms, including PlayStation, Neo Geo, SEGA CD, SEGA Saturn, and more. Why isn’t Dreamcast already supported? Mainly because the console uses the GD-ROM format instead of traditional CD-ROM discs, as the media is completely different and require special drives to run.
For those who have never heard of the Polymega, this Linux-based modular video game console basically includes a built-in CD drive, while separate add-ons, called Element Modules, provide support for cartridge-based games. It’s powered by a Coffee Lake processor and features Wi-Fi, Ethernet capability, HDMI output, as well as support for a light gun. As for looks, it’s definitely not as visually appealing as Razer’s modular Tomahawk gaming PC.

My understanding is that it will be challenging a normal DVD or Blu-ray drive that you could buy off the shelf in 2021 and 2022 to read a GD-ROM disc, but there’s more than one way to skin a hamster, or whatever! We are always thinking outside the box… maybe we can look at plugging in an original Dreamcast and load it in that way… something like that.
