A smart AirPods charging case with a touchscreen display might have been possibly leaked in a recent Apple patent filing. This would allow for a more intuitive user experience, as a smartphone, tablet or smartwatch will not be necessary to see notifications, change tracks, or even play a few games.
The patent sketches apparently show a touchscreen display on the front side of the charging case and various use cases including music audio output. When paired with Apple TV, the screen can be used to view videos or switch audio modes. Other possible uses include the Weather App, radio, audio books, and Apple Maps, which would definitely come in handy during travel.

The pink bubbles shown in the patent figures represent Siri communicating with the user about an app or service. One image below will show you that “squeezing” the case could signal to change the audio mode on Apple TV+ content,” according to Patently Apple.
