A Humvee offers soldiers plenty of protection from enemy fire as well as other obstacles, but even they need training should a rollover occur. This is where the Humvee Egress Assistance Trainer (HEAT) comes in, as it’s designed to train soldiers on the effects of a vehicle rollover and enables them to conduct drills that will provide the skill as well as ability to react properly during emergency egress situations. HEAT allows units to rehearse under controlled conditions and physically execute steps required to survive a rollover, giving occupants experience in how to orient themselves, collect possibly injured members and successfully exit the overturned vehicle. This is just one of the many simulators implemented across the Department of Defense to prepare soldiers for the tests of real-life emergency situations while allowing them to experience realistic combat situations without most of the dangers.

There will always be accidents, but most fatalities aren’t caused by the accident itself; they’re caused by a lack of experience and knowledge of how to exit the overturned vehicle. Simulation devices like the HEAT trainer are saving the military money, and more importantly, lives. Simulators provide a good degree of realism without the expense and danger that comes along with accomplishing the same level of immersive training,” said Anthony Harris, Army Support Activity Simulation Branch training support assistant.
