Audi RS Q E-Tron Hybrid Electric 2022 Dakar Rally
The Audi RS Q e-tron started out as a concept less than a year ago, and now it has become a reality. This off-road vehicle boasts an electrified drivetrain that will be used next January at the 2022 Dakar Rally. A grueling event for even the most powerful petrol vehicles, this 2-week marathon of sorts has stages that are up to 800 kilometers (497 miles) in length, making it the ultimate challenge for an electric drivetrain.

Yes, there is a petrol engine in this machine, but not for what you think. Its DTM-sourced 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged TFSI gasoline engine is actually a part of the energy converter system to charge the battery while driving and serves as a range extender between 4,500 to 6,000 rpm. In addition to the motor-generator units (MGU) at each axle producing a combined 670 hp, there’s a thid one to recharge the battery while the RS Q e-tron under intense driving, all fed by a 50 kWh battery.

The quattro was a gamechanger for the World Rally Championship. Audi was the first brand to win the Le Mans 24 Hours with an electrified drivetrain. Now, we want to usher in a new era at the Dakar Rally, while testing and further developing our e-tron technology under extreme conditions. Our RS Q e-tron was created on a blank sheet of paper in record time and stands for Vorsprung durch Technik,” said Julius Seebach, Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH and responsible for motorsport at Audi.
