William Gude happened to be around a police crime scene in Los Angeles when he noticed an autonomous food delivery robot making its way through the commotion. No, it didn’t find an alternate route, but rather rolled right on through the scene of a suspected shooting at Hollywood High School, ignoring the yellow caution tape.

What kind of robot is this? It is one made by Serve Robotics and equipped with Level 4 autonomy, which means they are typically capable of operating routinely without human intervention. They rely solely on their onboard capabilities to ensure safe operation. Each one is equipped with multiple layers of redundant systems for critical navigation functions including multiple sensor modalities—active sensors like LiDAR and ultrasonics, as well as passive sensors such as cameras.
