Smartphones today shine with their OLED screens, bright colors and smooth animations. But what if a phone took a completely different path—one that prioritizes your eyes, your battery and your focus? Meet the Bigme HiBreak Pro Color, a device that swaps out the usual glowing screen for a 6.13-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 screen.
E Ink displays are most familiar in e-readers like the Kindle, where their paper-like quality makes reading for hours a pain-free experience. The HiBreak Pro Color brings that same technology to a full-fledged smartphone, with a MediaTek Dimensity 1080 processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The screen, with 824 x 1648 resolution, delivers 300 ppi for black and white content, 150 ppi for color. That color—up to 4096 shades—comes from a filter layered over the monochrome E Ink panel. It’s not going to be as vivid as an OLED, but it’s a deliberate choice for a specific kind of user: someone who values clarity and comfort over flashy visuals.

Reading on this phone feels like flipping through a well-printed book. The Kaleido 3 display, with its adjustable front light with 36 levels of warm and cool tones, ensures text stays sharp and legible in any lighting, from bright sunlight to a dimly lit room. A built-in light sensor adjusts brightness automatically, so you’re not fiddling with sliders while squinting. Bigme’s “SSS” fast refresh technology pushes the screen to 21 frames per second, reducing the ghosting that can plague E Ink displays. It’s not perfect—scrolling can still feel a bit laggy compared to traditional screens—but for reading e-books, articles or emails, it’s a dream. The display sips power too, so the 4500mAh battery can last for days, even with 5G.

Performance doesn’t suffer despite the unusual screen. The Dimensity 1080, a mid-range chip with two ARM Cortex-A78 cores at 2.6 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores at 2 GHz, with a Mali-G68 MC4 GPU, handles Android 14 just fine. You can run apps from the Google Play Store, browse the web or send messages without hiccups. 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage means you have room for plenty of apps, e-books or documents. No microSD slot, but with that much space, most users won’t miss it. The phone supports dual SIM cards with 5G and 4G LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC for payments and an IR blaster for controlling your TV.

Photography isn’t the HiBreak Pro Color’s strong point but it gets the job done. The 20MP rear camera is great for document scanning with built-in OCR that turns paper into searchable text with impressive accuracy. The 5MP front camera is good enough for video calls but selfies won’t win any awards. These cameras are practical not flashy, which fits with the phone’s focus on productivity over pizzazz. The customizable smart keys are a nice touch, you can assign shortcuts for tasks like launching apps, scanning documents or switching reading modes.

Weighing 193g and 159.8 x 80.9 x 8.9mm the HiBreak Pro Color feels solid yet pocketable. The black finish with leather-like texture on the back is nice but the plastic build doesn’t scream premium. The screen is slightly sunken and unprotected by glass which might be a concern for some. But a included silicone case gives you some peace of mind. The dual speakers are decent for podcasts or audiobooks and the fingerprint sensor is quick and reliable. The integrated compass is handy for travelers.
Battery life is where this phone shines. The 4500mAh battery combined with the E Ink display’s low power draw means you’re charging every few days not daily. The 18W fast charging via USB-C gets you back up to speed quickly when needed. Unlike OLED screens that guzzle power for bright visuals the HiBreak Pro Color’s display barely sips power even when you’re reading for hours or browsing with the front light on. The HiBreak Pro Color is priced at $469, with a pre-order discount of $399 until early October.
