Here’s a rare look at the BMW i16 concept, the reported i8 successor that was canceled. Domagoj Dukec, BMW’s Head of Design, was working on a production-ready version of the Vision M Next Concept, which debuted at the company’s NextGen conference in Munich during 2019.
For comparison purposes, the Vision M Next was a plug-in hybrid consisting of a four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that generated a combined 600 horsepower, enabling it to hit 62 mph in a mere 3.0 seconds, while topping out at 186 mph. Unlike the Vision M Next, the i16 featured design cues inspired by the legendary BMW M1. Unfortunately, the project was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic.

But that’s how life goes sometimes. As designers, we are familiar with the many twists and turns of such projects. Nevertheless, we’ll never stop dreaming and exploring new possibilities, and there’s always a new project waiting around the corner,” said Domagoj Dukec, BMW Head of Design.
