Color changing paint is nothing new, but the BMW iX Flow takes it to a whole new level. It’s capable of fluid color changes in real-time, thanks to a specially developed E-ink body wrap. When this wrap is stimulated by electrical signals, the electrophoretic technology brings different color pigments to the surface, resulting in a body skin that can change shades instantly. Unlike standard displays or projectors, this technology does not require additional energy to keep the chosen color state constant.
For those wondering, the electrophoretic coloring is the same kind found in eReader displays. That’s right, the surface coating of this BMW iX Flow concept sports E Ink with many millions of microcapsules, each with a diameter equivalent to the thickness of a human hair. These microcapsules contains negatively charged white pigments and positively charged black pigments. Depending on the chosen setting, electrical stimulation causes either the white or the black pigments to collect at the surface of the microcapsule, giving the vehicle the desired shade.
