China’s six-wheeled rover, the Zhurong, has successfully landed on Mars. It will now explore Utopia Planitia, a vast terrain in the planet’s northern hemisphere, after touching down using a protective capsule, parachute and a rocket platform. The vehicle is about the size of NASA’s Opportunity rover and is equipped with six instruments, including a ground-penetrating radar and two panoramic cameras. Zhurong will work in tandem with the Tianwen-1 spacecraft to collect data on Mars, with the latter serving as a data relay station for communications between the rover and mission control teams on Earth. It will orbit the Red Planet for at least one Mars year, or around 687 Earth days.
