Elon Musk’s SpaceX is planning to launch its first uncrewed mission to Mars in less than four years. Why so long? Well, the opportunity to launch a mission to Mars comes every 26 months, since Earth would be closest to the red planet at that time. Musk believes that human beings need to establish a permanent and self-sustaining presence on Mars to ensure the continuance of consciousness as we know it in case of a catastrophic event that leaves Earth uninhabitable. Unfortunately, the 2024 Mars mission will not utilize robots to help establish the colony Musk has previously spoken about, but rather focus on essential tasks, such as transporting cargo as well as eventually taking humans to and from the red planet. Before any of this happens, SpaceX is scheduling a test of its latest Starship prototype — SN8 — for a 12-mile-high flight in the near future.
