Epoch Super Cassette Vision Game Console

Never heard of Epoch’s Super Cassette Vision? That’s probably because the near $300 USD (inflation adjusted) game console was only released in Japan and Europe during 1984, a time when the NES / Famicom was booming.

Featuring an 8-bit NEC μPD7801G microcontroller, 128 bytes of RAM, 4KB of ROM, an EPOCH TV-1 VDC video controller, and 1-channel sound. A total of 30 games were released and 3 unreleased, yet at least partially finished, including Black Hole, Super Derby, as well as Super Rugby. Nintendo’s Famicom and SEGA’s SG-1000 line proved to be much tougher competitors than expected, so the console was discontinued in 1987 after selling approximately 300,000 units. You can still purchase used examples in fairly excellent condition for just over $200 on third party auction sites.
