Modder Allison Parrish loves the Game Boy Pocket, but more so the Game Boy Advance SP form factor. So, a Game Boy Pocket was sacrificed and cut into two halves, or more specifically, the mainboard. The two sections were then connected using flexible ribbon cables, each in their own custom shell. A backlit IPS display replaced the original to ensure that the handheld could be played in the dark.
For those interested in trying this mod themselves, you’ll need a screen, lens and buttons from the Retro Game Repair Shop as well as a USB-C battery board from Gil Tesa. Since the screen and bezel were replaced, the Game Boy Pocket label can be picked up from Next Stop Please. As long as you have a 3D printer, the custom shells can be printed at home. You can get the flex PCB boards directly from OSH Park. (Make sure to order them as flex PCBs, not regular PCBs!) For the shell, you’ll need to download the STL files from this repository (or export them from the FreeCAD file) and then print them on your own 3D printer,” said Parrish.
