The Game Bub is a new open-source handheld gaming device built to bring back classic Game Boy experiences exactly as they were. It uses FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) tech to mimic the original Game Boy hardware, making sure games from the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and maybe other vintage systems play just like the originals.
It’s powered by a Xilinx XC7A100T FPGA with integrated memory for precise hardware emulation of Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance systems, thanks in part to a custom-designed 6-layer PCB for robust performance. This handheld also plays physical cartridges for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, as well as Game Boy Advance, and supports ROM emulation via a microSD card slot for loading game files.

Have a Game Link Cable? You can use it with Game Bub for multiplayer in both Game Boy and Game Boy Advance modes. There’s experimental support for Joybus mode, enabling connectivity with GameCube games that interface with the GBA (e.g., Animal Crossing). Want to play on the big screen? HDMI output via a custom docking station lets you do just that.

We can’t forget about the ESP32-S3 dual-core microcontroller with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities either, as it’s used for non-emulation tasks that don’t require the FPGA’s high-performance hardware replication. It probably manages network stuff, like Wi-Fi for things such as firmware updates, online multiplayer (if added), or syncing game data, and Bluetooth for linking up devices like wireless controllers or headphones.
Other features include speakers for sound, a rumble motor for vibration feedback, a real-time clock for games that use time-based features (like Pokémon), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth for possible future updates, an accelerometer and gyroscope, and a 15-hour battery life for long gaming sessions.
The Game Bub is still in the prototype phase and not yet available as a complete, prebuilt consumer product. However, a CrowdSupply crowdfunding campaign is planned to fund production of prebuilt Game Bub units. For enthusiasts, the project is fully open-source, with instructions, code, and design files available on GitHub.
