George Washington Painting Laser Restoration
Restoration specialist Julian of Bumgartner Restoration tackled his latest project, a George Washington painting, by zapping it with lasers. Why? The painting wasn’t reacting well to varnish, so a Laserscope Venus was brought out to clean it up.

It did take some tweaking of the power level and pulse, but eventually, the 2940 nm laser was perfectly tuned to break down the varnish without destroying the paint underneath. All it took was a few pulses in each area before the leftover residue could be cotton swabbed away. One thing to note is that a powerful laser won’t be able to repair damaged artworks, as job of that magnitude requires watercolors or specialized restoration paints.
