You’ve seen the Blu-ray laser scanning microscope, now check out Ben’s old hard drive turned functional portable laser projector. This battery-powered creation is capable of projecting text-based messages on surfaces over 90-feet away, all wirelessly over Bluetooth.
Since the hard drive contains a brushless motor, it can be used to create a persistence of vision display where the illusion of motion is created because the brain interprets multiple still images as one. To achieve this, Ben designed a custom rotating mirror array to use the hard drive motor, controlled with an Arduino board. The green laser comes equipped with a heat sink and a driver board that can be used for the input signals. When the laser is turned on, it flashes on and off against the mirrors to produce lines. These lines then form the letters that you see being projected.
