Some new leaks say the iPhone 17 Pro will have a much cutout for its rear cameras than older models. Pictures of supposed iPhone 17 Pro cases, posted by a leaker named Sonny Dickson, show a large rectangular spot on the back, suggesting the camera part is getting a complete redesign.
This larger cutout is thought to fit a new “camera tray” design, swapping out the square camera bump on today’s iPhone 16 Pro. The tray is like a flat, wide bar that goes across the phone’s back, kind of like what you see on some Google Pixel phones. It’s expected to hold three camera sensors—probably still in that familiar triangle arrangement—plus a LiDAR scanner, a microphone, and an LED flash, all potentially repositioned for a more symmetrical layout.

Nobody’s totally sure why they’re doing this yet, but speculation suggests it could allow for larger camera sensors (possibly including an upgraded 48MP telephoto lens), better thermal management, or improved spatial separation for enhanced depth mapping. The design shift might also be a visual refresh, as Apple hasn’t significantly altered the iPhone’s rear look in recent years.
