This homemade LEGO-powered submarine is something you probably never imagined possible with the colorful bricks, and you’d be partially correct. Why? It’s not entirely made from LEGO, as it makes use of a water ballast, complete with both a pressure sensor as well as laser rangefinder, for automatic depth control.
In addition to automatic depth control, it can move forward, reverse, rotate clockwise / counterclockwise, and even record what it sees underwater. You operate it with a remote control, while propulsion comes from two propellers powered by LEGO Technic motors, all encased in a plexiglass cylinder sealed with O-rings. An R/C transmitter receives the commands from the remote control and then a Raspberry Pi Zero module decodes them for the motors. As for us, this LEGO submarine is far more affordable than this $90,000 Seabreacher killer whale submarine.
