But a closer peek shows their big secret: they’re made by ICON’s Vulcan II, a huge 3D printer that builds them layer by layer using a special concrete mix called “Lavacrete.” The result is a collection of single-story homes ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 square feet, with three to four bedrooms and two to three bathrooms, priced between $450,000 and $600,000—competitive for the Austin metro area.
The construction process is a marvel. Unlike traditional homes, which rely on timber framing, drywall, and a small army of subcontractors, Wolf Ranch’s homes are printed in about three weeks. The Vulcan II, a 45-foot-wide behemoth, lays down Lavacrete to form walls that are both structural and insulating, with a texture that’s smooth yet subtly striated, reminiscent of natural stone. The homes feature open floor plans, high ceilings (up to 10 feet), and expansive windows that flood interiors with natural light. Roofs, windows, and mechanical systems are added conventionally, blending cutting-edge technology with familiar craftsmanship.

And while the homes are priced competitively, they’re not the ultra-affordable housing solution some might expect from 3D printing, at least not yet.
The Wolf Ranch community makes living there even better. It’s built for walking, with trails, parks, and a community center that help neighbors feel connected. People love being part of this new 3D-printed home experiment, sharing stories about their homes’ unique wall patterns with visitors. Still, some mention a bit of judgment—one resident laughed, “My mom thought I lived in a ‘concrete bunker,’ but she changed her mind after seeing it.”
