MACA is a France-based startup that unveiled plans at CES 2021 for a racing series based around their hydrogen-powered Carcopter. They claim it’s the first manned flying hydrogen Formula 1-style vehicle, capable of hitting a top speed of 153 mph. Since Formula 1 has plans to eliminate the carbon footprint of their vehicles and the on-track activities, it would actually make sense to have a drivetrain to replace their current hybrid power unit. The company brought an 8-foot scale model to the digital trade show, but the production model is expected to measure 16-feet in length, powered by hydrogen fuel cells. For additional safety, a semi-autonomous system will be implemented because mid-air collisions can most certainly be a big risk. MACA is planning to test the Carcopter on actual F1 circuits later this year, with an actual race taking place at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France by 2023.
