Mars Surface 4K Video
UK-based ElderFox specializes in space exploration documentaries and recently released new footage of Mars that was rendered in breathtaking 4K resolution. All of the images used was captured by three NASA rovers, which are Spirit, Opportunity, and Curiosity. Why do some of them look different than from the official NASA archives? Well, there were some shots that required recoloring to help geologists identify surface details with more clarity. Read more for the clip and additional information.

For now, it would be nearly impossible to stream live footage from the Martian surface because the rovers are limited to a painfully slow 32 kilobits per second upload speed, but it does get boosted to 2 megabytes per second when the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is in view. On another note, if you see streaks in the footage above, it’s because they’re quite common across Mars and new ones appear frequently on steep slopes of craters, troughs, and valleys. They are dark at first and get lighter with age, starting out in a tiny area, then spreading out for hundreds of meters.
