McDonald’s China quickly sold out of a bizarre Chicken McNugget-shaped Tetris game that was being offered to celebrate the food item’s 40th anniversary. The handheld device was being offered for 30 yuan ($4.24) with the purchase of any meal, and it even came with a bonus McNugget-themed carrying case of sorts.
Even with 400,000 units available a select locations across the mainland, all of them sold out near instantly. McDonald’s first Executive Chef Rene Arend came up with the idea for Chicken McNuggets in 1979 and tested at select restaurants. The chain realized that there was not a system to supply enough chicken, but were eventually resolved by 1983, and Chicken McNuggets became available nationwide. It turns out that there are actually four different McNugget shapes: Bell, Bone, Boot, and Ball.
