Here’s a fascinating look back at the Microsoft Cordless Phone System from 1998, which was the company’s first telephone device of any kind. It consisted of a cordless phone, base station, and charging cradle.
In addition to being able to make and receive telephone calls independently from a PC, the base station could be connected to a computer for additional functionality, including enhanced caller ID features as well as PC voice message integration. A separate Call Manager application for Windows 95 / Windows 98 enabled users to make / receive calls, as well as listen to or delete voice messages, contacts, and call history. Two features you probably didn’t expect the MCPS to have was speech recognition and speech synthesis capabilities. A user could use their voice to command the cordless handset to call a desired contact, while a caller ID feature would announce the name of an incoming caller.
