NASA Perseverance Mars Rover Sample Return Future Mission
NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover photographed several sample tubes that are set for return to Earth on a future mission. Eight of them are filled with rock and regolith, while the last two are atmospheric and “witness” tubes. These were captured using the Mastcam-Z camera on the top of its head on January 31, 2023.

This collection of samples will be transported back to Earth in the future Mars Sample Return campaign, a joint mission between the European Space Agency and NASA. The depot where these tubes are located can be found at “Three Forks,” a location within Jezero Crater. A river flowed into the crater billions of years ago, carrying sediment that formed a steep, fan-shaped delta that Perseverance will drive up in the coming months.

NASA Perseverance Mars Rover Sample Return Future Mission

A key objective for Perseverance’s mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet’s geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith (broken rock and dust),” said NASA.
