PlayStation 5 Patent

The Sony PlayStation 5 is rumored to be officially unveiled on February 12, 2020 during a press conference, but that has yet to be confirmed. However, a design patent recently uncovered reveals what just might be the final design. This patent is significant because it was drafted by Sony’s technical director Yusuhiro Ootori who appeared in the first PS4 teardown. Read more for additional pictures and information.

Sony applied for this design patent at the INPI (Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial) in Brazil some time during May this year, after which it was officially registered on August 13, 2019 in the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) database. It’s classified as ‘configuration applied to / in electronic device’ and categorized under Class 14.02, which includes ‘data processing equipment and peripheral equipment’, where game consoles are found.

The PS4 design was also patented last year in Brazil, placed within Class 14.02. Yes, it was also filed by Yusuhiro Ootori, the engineering director at Sony. The illustration above depicts the two Sony patents side by side.
