Ray Tracing Ti-84 Plus CE Graphing Calculator
You can run DOOM on a potato-powered TI-84, and then this ray tracing program on a TI-84 Plus CE graphing calculator. Before asking why everything is so slow, the lag is due to TI-BASIC, the built-in language that Science Elf used to interpret the program. In other words, the TI-84’s processor doesn’t run the program, just the software that opens that actual ray tracing demo.

Fortunately, Science Elf figured out that he needed to use C++ and Assembler to rewrite the program. This meant ditching the old renderer for a new one that cut down rendering time from 6-hours to a mere 12-minutes. Despite just being a calculator, the TI-84 Plus CE’s display has a higher resolution than many classic game consoles, which enables it to show several effects including diffuse / reflective shading, texture-mapping, dithering, global illumination and more.
