Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) introduces “THE RIG,” which is basically an offshore oil platform turned theme park. Not only will it have a functional roller coaster, but also three hotels, complete with water slides, diving areas and bungee jumping from some of the tallest areas on the rig. This project is aimed to help Saudi Arabia become a leading global tourist destination, and the plan is for tourism to be the second largest contributor to GDP after oil and gas by 2030. From the press photos, it appears that at least one of the restaurants or lounge areas will be located underwater, providing breathtaking views for guests.

The Rig is in line with PIF’s strategy 2021-2025 to drive innovation in Saudi Arabia’s tourism and entertainment sectors, providing promising development opportunities to achieve economic diversification in line with the Saudi Vision 2030 objectives. This project is a unique tourism attraction, expected to attract tourists from around the world, while being especially popular with citizens and residents of the GCC countries in the region,” according to a press release.
