SEGA’s Virtua Fighter was first released in arcades in 1993 and compared to the 3D graphics of today, the characters look a bit polygonal to say the least. That is why artist Colin Williamson decided to come up with a few Stable Diffusion AI text prompts to see if they can be smoothed out, and after some tweaking, these characters ensued.

This fighting game takes place in a 3D environment, but movement was restricted to 2D. AM2 created the characters using wireframe and flat-shaded quad polygons. Aesthetics aside, Virtua Fighter relied on a control stick and only three buttons, punch, kick, and guard (block) unlike other fighting games of the early 1990s like Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat.

Though the hardest part was simply figuring out how to describe the characters’ clothes. I’m happy to stand on the backs of giants and harness millions of dollars’ worth of AI research to make some dumb pictures that make people laugh. I need to fire up the Sega Saturn and see what else I can find,” said Williamson to ArsTechnica.
