Snazzy Labs didn’t need a new keyboard for their Mac, but wanted Touch ID still, so they came up with a clever solution. They removed the logic board from Apple’s Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and created a 3D-printed enclosure to house it, thus creating a standalone button that can be placed anywhere on your desk.
Touch ID was first introduced in the iPhone 5S and 2016’s MacBook Pro. The module itself is built into the home button, which is composed of scratch-resistant, laser-cut sapphire crystal. A stainless steel detection ring is used to sense the user’s finger without needing them to actually press it. The capacitive touch sensor has a thickness of 170 µm, with 500 pixels per inch resolution, and functions regardless of the user’s finger orientation. Now we just need Apple to integrate wireless charging pads into the next MacBook Pro.
