Toy Guitar Into Electric Ukulele
This wooden toy guitar turned into a working electric ukulele is something you’d expect to find in Andy’s room, and Joe Kutz thought so too. However, this modification isn’t as easy as some may think, especially since the first step was reducing the string count from six to four, which involved creating new positions on the nut and drilling the grooves.

Next, Joe needed to fabricate pickups, which are essentially the components that generate an audio signal for amplifying a guitar. In this case, piezoelectrick pickup were selected to conver the physical vibration of a guitar’s wooden body into an electric current. A pair of children’s headphones, wooden dowels, paper cones, 3D-printed parts, and glue were used to fabricate the pickups. The result of this was an output signal of around 80mV peak-to-peak, but a UTC2025H stereo pre-amplifier was then added to give him an overdrive option.
