Toyota GR LH2 Racing Concept Hydrogen Race Car
On June 11, 2025, at the Le Mans 24 Hours’ H2 Village in France, Toyota pulled the curtain off their GR LH2 Racing Concept—a liquid hydrogen-powered race car that marks a giant leap forward for sustainable race cars.

This beast is built on the bones of the GR010 HYBRID, a proven warrior that’s racked up six straight manufacturers’ championships in the World Endurance Championship (WEC). That’s a legacy of engineering swagger right there. But the GR LH2 takes things to a whole new level by ditching the hybrid setup for a liquid hydrogen system. This required some serious brainpower to redesign the fuel delivery and storage, since liquid hydrogen has to be kept at a bone-chilling -253°C to stay stable. Toyota’s no stranger to hydrogen tech—its Corolla H2 has been ripping through Japan’s Super Taikyu series since 2021.

Toyota GR LH2 Racing Concept Hydrogen Race Car
The engineering wizards at Toyota have gone all-in to make liquid hydrogen work. Unlike gaseous hydrogen, which needs beefy high-pressure tanks, liquid hydrogen calls for cryogenic storage that’s a whole different kind of challenge. The GR LH2’s fuel system boasts thermal management tech that ensures the ultra-frigid fuel stays liquid from the tank to the engine.Toyota isn’t disclosing horsepower figures yet, but the company hints at performance that rivals its hybrid predecessors, with the added benefit of zero carbon emissions. The only byproduct? Water vapor.

“This test car is a significant step in our journey toward a carbon-neutral society,” says a Toyota spokesperson. “By developing hydrogen technology in the extreme environment of motorsports, we’re not only refining the tech but also building partnerships to expand hydrogen’s potential.” The company’s focus on motorsports as a proving ground is deliberate.

Endurance racing fans will notice the GR LH2’s sleek silhouette, unmistakably derived from the GR010 HYBRID. Its aerodynamic lines are optimized for the 13.6-kilometer Circuit de la Sarthe. The car’s livery, unveiled at Le Mans, pays homage to Toyota’s 40-year history at the race. Though it’s a test car for now, the GR LH2 is set to undergo real-world track testing, with Toyota eyeing a future hydrogen class in WEC, potentially as early as 2026. Social media posts reflects the excitement, with users calling it a “game-changer” for sustainable racing.

“We’re not just racing for trophies,” Toyota’s statement continues. “Motorsports is where we forge technologies that benefit society. The GR LH2 Racing Concept is about proving hydrogen’s viability in the most demanding conditions.” The company has already showcased hydrogen’s potential in rallies, with the GR Yaris H2 running a demonstration at the 2022 WRC Ypres Rally.
