Land Cruiser owners now have a companion who takes over when the four wheels cannot go any farther. Toyota debuted the Land Hopper, a three-wheeled electric personal mobility concept designed to navigate tight trails and mountain paths with two wheels and a third for stability. With the ability to shrink to the size of a thick book, it fits well into a Land Cruiser’s cargo space before popping out allowing you to explore the great outdoors, as well as places where your larger vehicle just cannot fit.
The Land Cruiser’s designers created the Land Hopper after noticing a potential issue. Drivers arrive at the trailhead in their Land Cruiser, but it does not get them where they want to go, as you know those true hidden jewels are just out of reach. They came up with a three-wheeled solution, with two up front for optimal control and a third for when things become bumpy. The ingenious part is that the front two wheels rotate in opposing directions, allowing one wheel to go up a bump while the other stays put. This keeps everything stable and you on two wheels.

To move it, twist the throttle to the right, press the power button, and a little display tells how fast you’re going and what mode you’re in. The turn signals, as you might expect, select two riding modes. When things get tight, one blinks for a slower tempo, while the other stays constant for the big open sections. You also have cruise control for even longer straight parts, and the brakes are easy to use.
When you’re finished, it all folds up. Simply pull a lever, pop it up in the air, and the saddle comes off, the handlebars come in a bit, and it’s done. You’re left with something around half the size of the original. Now that’s what I call transportable! Dimensions – when folded, it measures 680mm x 450mm and is tiny enough to fit in the back of a Land Cruiser alongside your gear. When you wish to use it, it measures 1370mm long, 590mm wide, and 990mm tall. It’s a little wider, but not too big for one person.
It also has a replaceable battery that can be charged using any old household adapter. There’s no need for a particular socket or anything. This machine is also really quiet, allowing you to enjoy the journey without being distracted by engine noise. Toyota has put a lot of effort into this, using the same courses as they do for the Land Cruiser and fine-tuning the software to make it nice and predictable. It all feels a little more natural, you know.
Production begins in spring 2027 or later, first in Japan. Exact pricing, top speed, and range figures remain undisclosed while final tuning continues, yet the prototype already demonstrates clear priorities: stability, simplicity, and the ability to travel farther into nature without leaving the fun behind.
