Yes, a six-wheeled F1 car actually exists, and it’s called the Tyrrell P34. It was first introduced in September 1975 and participated in its first race a year later. Despite its bizarre design, many other teams started to design their own six-wheeled platforms, but unfortunately, several changes made it uncompetitive for the 1977 season.
This vehicle utilized four specially manufactured 10″ diameter wheels and tires up front, with two ordinary-sized wheels at the back. Tyrrell was one of the most unique entries ever to succeed in F1 competition and has been called the most recognizable design in the history of world motorsports. Power comes from a 3.0L V8 Ford-Cosworth DFV engine making 469 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque, mated to a 5-speed or 6-speed manual transmission, depending on the year. Ben Collins, previously known as the Stig, managed to get behind the wheel of a Tyrrell P34 and shows us just how it handles on the track.
