British defense company Ultra Electronics debuted the world’s first commercial mind-controlled drone prototype at a security expo in Malvern, England. Put simply, this system enables a person connected to a computer to control the drone’s movements through their thought. How so? All the need to do is focus their gaze on specific circles on the computer screen for navigation.
The shapes seen on the laptop screen are referred to as “tags”, and depending on how the eye looks at them, the appropriate signal is sent to the brain’s visual cortex. Once this happens, the headband looks for these signals and then turns it into commands for the drone. No, it doesn’t use the laptop webcam to track the user whatsoever. The company claims that this technology has many practical uses, including unmanned ground vehicles or vessels and eventually the battlefield.
