Underwater Whale Footage 18.7K Cinema Camera
Filmmaker Pawel Achtel shot this incredible underwater whale footage with his custom-built 18.7K cinema camera. This innovative 9×7 digital cinema camera was housed inside a custom-designed Vanquish underwater case, complete with modified Nikonos submersible lenses.

This system is reportedly similar to what James Cameron used to shoot some of the underwater Avatar: The Way of Water scenes. The footage is allegedly high enough resolution to work with IMAX, The MSG Sphere, Flying Theater, and other massive cinema screen systems. All of the underwater footage you see here was shot in collaboration with marine science researcher Professor Rob Harcout.

The weather and the whales were mostly cooperative. Occasionally we were with faced heavy rain and strong winds, but the underwater shots we captured were otherworldly. You can see every pore on the humpbacks’ skin, the fine hairs, and every bubble released from their fins—this is a magic that cannot be replicated, even through a diving mask,” said Achtel.
