You’ve probably seen pictures of the mysterious “world’s loneliest house,” and for those who don’t already know, it’s real, but just very hard to access. Why? It’s located on Elliðaey, a remote island off the southern coast of Iceland. Currently, it’s deserted, but during the early 1900s, the island was inhabited by five families, with the last one leaving in the 1930s. Today, the house is owned by the Ellidaey Hunting Association.

The Ellidaey Hunting Association built a small house on the island during the 1950s, and uses it as a hunting cabin as well as sauna for its members. The members who do visit typically hunt birds on the island, including puffins, gannets, petrels, and razorbills. Whatever the case may be, actually getting there is quite the adventure, and a dangerous one at that, as YouTuber Ryan Trahan shows.

Series from the loneliest house in Iceland. How epic would it be to live there? Far away from civilization with no neighbors for miles and miles around,” said photographer Hörður Kristleifsson in an Instagram post.
